This high-speed spirometer brings the very latest in aerospace sensing technology to the field of respiratory diagnostics, taking advantage of the manufacturing capabilities now available thanks to precision 3-D printing.

This instrument (dubbed the “sneezometer“, as it is fast enough to record a sneeze), currently undergoing certification trials, it emerged from fundamental research, and is being developed in conjunction with medical clinicians at King’s College Hospital in London. See the video here.

Capabilities and performance

This high-speed, high-accuracy flow meter detects flow rates using pressure differences and our patented geometry, with high-precision sensing elements developed for use in aerospace applications.

The system uses direct-to-digital pressure transducers with built-in temperature compensation, operating at 1 kHz in sample-and-hold mode. By keeping the sensors as close as possible to the point of measurement, there is minimal signal attenuation.
