THE WORLD’S SMALLEST CONSTANT-TEMPERATURE HOT-WIRE ANEMOMETER

Compact and fully self-contained constant-temperature hot wire bridge and driver system, with integrated square wave test and output filter

This ultraminiature analogue constant-temperature hot-wire system is a fully self-contained, simple and economical solution to turbulence measurement needs. With a 40 kHz response and no small-signal cable required, these units are ideally suited for electrically noisy environments. Compatible with leading brands of hot-wire probes and with a footprint of only 9 mm x 28 mm, this compact and simple analogue measurement solution is ideal for applications in model- and sting-embedded instrumentation.

With a cost and size at at least an order of magnitude smaller than a conventional hot-wire CTA bridge system, this miniature unit provides all the necessary functionality to carry out turbulence measurements with minimal complexity. The system includes an on-board square wave test for tuning, and a built-in fourth-order butterworth filter and amplifier which can be enabled using the microswitches on the PCB. Probes can be socketed directly into the board, or attached using extension leads; a compensation network is included for extension cables (if used).

Applications

Miniature hot-wire anemometry system

Wind tunnel measurements

This system provides an ideal alternative to high-cost, rack-mounted hot-wire systems for turbulence measurement. The ultra-miniature footprint is ideal for model-embedded instrumentation, while the low cost of the units make large channel-count rakes and arrays for simultaneous spatial correlations a real possibility.

Education

The low cost and simple operation of the unit are ideally suited to educational applications, while the small size means this hot-wire system can be easily added to small-section table-top wind tunnels and demonstrations.

Research

The high fidelity, minimal signal noise and 40 kHz bandwidth provide high-quality velocity statistics down to the dissipation range in many common measurement applications, while the probe compatibility allows continued use of existing hot-wire probe supplies.
